Did you know (those are three of my favorite words, BTW) – that St. Patrick’s Day is not the only holiday in March?  Oh, no.  There’s lots of other stuff being celebrated in March and after reading through the entire list, it does make one wonder if bright green adult beverages were involved in the making of some of the more obscure days of observation.

 

Ever since I was a little girl, I was fascinated by the other holidays that showed up on the calendar besides the “big ones.”  I always felt a bit let down once the mad-mad celebrations from October to February were over.  Once upon a time, when the last chocolate left the Valentine’s box of sweets, it seemed like a celebration wasteland from March to September.

Turns out, some folks — likely ones who were snowed in — decided they weren’t going to stand for quiet times before the sunshine (hopefully) showed up in April.  A quick internet search turned up 255 days of holidays JUST for the month of March.  There are plenty of wonderful days of observance, should you choose one of those (ex: Purple Day in support of epilepsy March 26 or Well-Elderly/Wellderly Day March 16 the Third Monday in March) – but, to help you out, I’ve pulled a few for you to consider.  Should you not care for any of these, mark your calendar for March 26^th – it is, after all, YOUR DAY to be creative.  If nothing else, celebrate that fact.

• National Fruit Compote Day: March 1 – Because more menus should probably have “compote” on them.
• National Peanut Butter Lover’s Day: March 1 – Mmmm. More quiet time to be had as people eat peanut butter.
• National Pig Day: March 1 – Pink curly-tailed squeal-y goodness should be celebrated.
• Plan a Solo Vacation Day: March 1 – If not you, what better time to suggest such a thing to SOME people.
• Share a Smile Day: March 1 – This should be weekly anywhoose.
• World Compliment Day: March 1 – See above statement.
• Dr. Seuss Day/Read Across America Day: March 2 – I raise my juice to Dr. Suess!
• National Banana Cream Pie Day: March 2 – We shouldn’t even question this.
• If Pets had Thumbs Day: March 3 – A day to contemplate the possibilities. Ergh!
• National Pancake Day (IHOP) : March 3, 2015 – All hail FREE pancakes at Int’l House of Pancakes!
• National Cheese Doodle Day: March 5 – The dust would be like orange fireworks, don’t you think?
• Dress in Blue Day: March 6 (First Friday in March) – Because most people look really good in blue.
• Middle Name Pride Day: March 6 – I’ve never liked mine, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to trot it out once a year to air it out, if not appreciate it. >:^/
• Alexander Graham Bell Day: March 7 – Call your mother.
• Check Your Batteries Day: March 8 (2nd Sunday in March) – Let’s celebrate your safety. A good thing.
• Daylight Savings Start: March 8 (movable day) – Lots of people don’t mind losing an hour of sleep to gain the longer days. 
• Barbie Day: March 9 – She has EVERYthing else. Why not a holiday?
• Get Over It Day: March 9 – The official time to Let it Go, Shake it Off, Live and Let Die.
• National Napping Day: March 9 (Monday after Daylight Savings Starts) – Thank heavens.
• National Blueberry Popover Day: March 10 – Because I’ve never had one and I’m sure to celebrate when I do.
• Johnny Appleseed Day: March 11 – LOVED this holiday in elementary school!!
• Popcorn Lover’s Day: March 12, 2015 (Second Thursday in March) – My love of popcorn needs no special day, but I’ll take it.
• National Pi Day: March 14 – Because you’ll feel smart celebrating AND you get to eat pi(e).
• National Potato Chip Day: March 14 – A day to eat the ruffle-y kind that my parents said were only for grown-ups.
• Save a Spider Day: March 14 – Or, as I like to call it Get Other People to Do This Day.
• World Book Day:  March 14 – Psssh. We all know this is something to observe daily.
• Ides of March:  March 15 – Uhm, scary day – but it’s famous. So, I felt intimidated to include it.
• True Confessions Day: March 15 – Invite OTHERS to engage, sit back and watch the fireworks.
• Lips Appreciation Day: March 16 – Because I’ve always thought kissing could be an Olympic sport.
• National Artichoke Hearts Day: March 16 – I grew up too close to Castroville to ignore it.
• St. Patrick’s Day: March 17 – Everyone is a little bit Irish, so enjoy. “Lá fhéile Pádraig sona dhuit!”
• Act Happy Day: March 19 – Invite that ONE person who needs the practice.
• Let’s Laugh Day:  March 19 – And nobody gets made fun of, no matter how hearty the laugh!
• Snowman Burning Day:  March 20 – Just because I wanna see what this looks like. Do we toast with tea afterwards?
• Spring Equinox:  March 20, 2015 – If nothing else, a time for balance.
• Won’t You Be My Neighbor Day:  March 20 – Fred Rogers deserves to be honored and observed.
• World Storytelling Day:  March 20 – I’m sorry, I celebrate this 365 days a year.
• Maple Syrup Saturday:  March 21 (Third Saturday of March) – Mmmm.
• National Common Courtesy Day: March 21 – I think we should practice all year for this.
• National Goof Off Day:  March 22 – There should be one day to get away with it.
• International Waffle Day:  March 25 – Does IHOP know about this?!
• Manatee Appreciation Day: March 25 (Last Wednesday in March) – They are mighty cute.
• Make Up Your Own Holiday Day: March 26  – Get out your pad and pencil.
• Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day: March 27 – I’ll expect your list soon.
• Respect Your Cat Day: March 28 – Bow down and have the catnip chilled.
• Something on a Stick Day: March 28 – What?
• Take A Walk In the Park Day: March 30 – Because the weather MIGHT be okay by the 30th.
• Turkey Neck Soup Day: March 30 – So, that stuff you froze back in November and December…
• Tater Day: March 31 – Spend the day in the kitchen frying, boiling, baking… Mmmmm!

This is only a smattering of the holidays to be found for March.  Clearly, the minor holidays need a better publicist.  Like Kale.  [Seriously.  Who are the people Kale using to get All That Press? I lived in the farmlands of Central California until I was a teenager and I never even heard of Kale until the new millennium.]  Ooh.  Maybe that will have to be on the agenda for March 26^th this year.
