Which means that soon, kids will be in my hair! Whoohoo!! Not that I’m really complaining. I actually truly enjoy the first bouncy, trouncy days when those school doors fling open and the kids are finally out for summer — because the kids are excited about sleeping in (so am I, truth be told) and riding scooters and bikes waaaay past the normal bedtime hours. Then, somewhere around the sixth or seventh business day of no true structure, everyone starts to fray a little at the edges. We’ve worn out our welcome at the neighbor’s pool and the guy up the street who goes to work in the middle of the night is cranky to have his sleep interrupted by squealing neighbor kids playing street hockey in the cul-de-sac until 9pm or later. Sigh. Those are the days when it seems like the new school year will just not start soon enough for everybody!
However, this year there are very exciting things on the calendar. Plenty of lakeside, seaside and river clean-ups and activities to tend to! With nearly 75% of earth’s surface being water, I’m sure we could book every waking moment if we wanted to, right? With my children’s chapter book Miss L’eau having had such a big promotional push this past Earth Day (April 22nd, 2009) I’m looking forward to the many opportunities that summer will bring to continue her inspiring message of water conservation and preservation. Folks all over the United States will be checking in to tell about their ideas and events throughout the next few months. I’m looking forward to sharing their stories!
